I did some more research on the DSR500, It has a built in MPG2
Encoder. It looks like the Ethernet would be for output to a
computer. Or possibly you could use the USB as well. Seems kind of
strange though as it does not have a Hard Drive built in that it would
copy over on the fly. Hmmmmm really strange peice of work that is
but I still wouldn't spend $399 for it :)

Well I am no good at soldering and small things like that Fat Fingers
stop me from being able to do that.

But I do know some people that can do that. If you can send me the
list of parts it woudl be greatly appreciated.

I have Motorolla receivers, not sure what they are calling them other
then that, and I checked out the price of the DSR500 OMFG $400, it's
not worth it if you ask me.

Really out of all this all I want to do is to be able to CAP tv shows
that I am not home for with out having to go out and buy another VCR,
all mine the record function just does not work properly, or go out
and get a PVR when I have a TV-Tuner card in one of my systems.

I just don't get the functionality on the Windows Based system that
MythTV seems to offer.

Oh well I digress and I want to try this out so if you could pass on
any relavent info on building my own IRBlaster it would be greatly
appreciated.

TIA

Ok well the two receivers that I have do not have a Serial port on
them. Or any other type of port other then for input or output of the
signal. I guess I will look into making/purchasing an IR Blaster,
though I was hoping I could do it without one.

Thanx

hi,

i've got a few starchoice receivers (navigo 301, 305, and 401), and none
of them can be controlled via serial port.

however, i bought some parts and built a couple of ir blasters (based on
http://www.lirc.org/improved_transmitter.html ), and they work great
with my receivers.

if you decide to build your own, i can give you a list of the part
numbers that i used.

on a side note, the starchoice DSR500 has 3 USB ports (1 front, 2 back)
and a 10/100 ethernet port ... here's a picture:

http://www.starchoice.com/images/product/dsr500_large_back.jpg

it'd be interesting to see how they could be used ...

here's a list of the parts i used. i purchased most of it from
http://www.digikey.ca/, but you can find these things in lots of other
places. at least with the digikey part # you'll have a starting point:

part desc DigiKey part # case style
=============================   ===============         =============
silicon diode 1N4148FS-ND DO-35
.25W resistors (5% tol, 1k) 1.0KQBK-ND Axial
.25W resistors (5% tol, 2.2k) 2.2KQBK-ND Axial
.25W resistors (5% tol, 3.9k) 3.9KQBK-ND Axial
.25W resistors (5% tol, 10k) 10KQBK-ND Axial
.25W resistors (5% tol, 22ohm) 22QBK-ND Axial
4700 uF capacitor 493-1047-ND Radial
PNP transistor ZTX549-ND TO-92
NPN transistor PN2222AFS-ND TO-92
IR diode 475-1088-ND

for the female serial (DB9) connector, you can use an old serial mouse.
for the connection wire/solder, i just used some cat 5e (with a solid
core, not stranded stuff). and the circuit board was from Radio Shack
-- i think it had 417 holes, and i was able to split it in half and get
two blasters from one board.

since the red LED and 0.5k resistor were optional (only for visible
feedback, and that can be done with a video camera), i didn't use them.
makes it a tad smaller and cheaper.

hope that helps,
stephen

Naw, can't say that I would spend that on it either. I think it also handles high-def signals, but since I don't have an HDTV-capable television, it'd be a waste.
