I have a pretty liberal definition of happily, too.
I have the HD3000 working with 2.6.9 patched with the recent 0.16 kernel patches; meaning, the command line tools work, and xine HD works if you talk to it nicely (but there are lots of issues like, it doesn't work unless you do something on the command line first, lots of weirdness changing channels, etc).
Based on comments, I did not even try using mythtv 0.16; was this a mistake?
I did a recent CVS build (debian packaging and all) and tried that. I
saw major, major instability. I could occasionally get something
resembling the hdtv video on the screen, but it was never pretty and it
never lasted long. Leaving aside mythtv altogether, my PVR-250 wouldn't
work after dumping any HDTV.
Yet scanning the archive I see what looks like a lot of people using the HD2000 or 3000 with mythtv. Is it really true that people have this working? And if so, is there a concise recipe of versions and patches that worked for you?

I have it working in a Mandrake 10.1 system. The hardest part was finding out one of my channels cannot be receive by myth (the one I put as the default channel.) for some reason I don't know the tsprog setting for it. the only mplayer way to get it is tsprog 0 the rest work just much better. zap2it has two of the pbs subchannels on the same subchannel 10-1 and 10-1. I turned one off and that fixed many issues also.
