I knew I forgot something ;-) I forgot to say the reason I mentioned it is because this is the same box I was talking about a couple of days ago.

like a previous guy said,
software and a write-up would be EXCELLENT! If I did this, I think
I'd replace the two LED lights already in the front of my case for
power/hdd. This has been a top 5 request of mine for myth for a long
time, and this is even beyond what I had imagined!

Software coming soon.

Currently you will need to be running Myth CVS. I will keep a patch for .17 once it is released. Unless of course Isaac likes the patch and incorporates it.

Here is a little overview on how the daemon works:

The daemon opens a serial port to communicate with the LED box and a network socket to communicate with the backend.
Depending on the options passed queries are sent to the backend. Currently the queries are: QUERY_FREESPACE, QUERY_GUIDEDATATHROUGH, QUERY_NEWMESSAGES, and QUERY_RECORDER. Not all of these queries currently exist in the backend. As soon as I finish testing the current CVS and my patches I will send a patch to the dev list.
