Most X applications assume square pixels. The text rendering in Qt does as well, though the MythTV OSD text gets it right.

Most applications that display video on Linux read DisplaySize from the
X server and scale appropriately.  Mplayer is the biggest exception,
though you can tell it your display is 16:9 or 4:3.
