I went from FC1 to FC3 with almost no problem at all.  Backing up
your current database is a very good idea, but why the database restore?
It should all be there still...

Also, there's not much reason not to try yum or (my preference) apt-get
to upgrade your mythtv rpms.  I've had mixed results using apt-get to
upgrade distros, and wouldn't recommend it for going from FC2 to FC3, 
but as for upgrading mythtv, applying updates, and adding other extra
packages apt-get can't be beat.
