It seems to depend on your AC3 receiver. ALSA is currently unable to set the SPDIF control bits correctly for AC3; if your receiver doesn't care then it works for you. If your receiver does care, then it doesn't work. PCM works because the default control bits are correct. DTS works because the receiver is less fussy. (Both PCM and DTS work for me, but not AC3. My receiver is a Sony STR-DE835.) Some of the Wikis and the like talk about getting the magic .asoundrc for this configuration. I don't believe there is such a configuration file; it's a driver deficiency which is due to lack of documentation by NVIDIA. I use PCM out with no .asoundrc at all.
