I have the exact same problem, it started a while ago can't remeber exactly when but i send a mail about it to the devel list. I never found out why it didn't work so i just changed the defaults instead.
Does no one read the README anymore?
ok, so it wasn't particularly clear in there, either (fixed now, though).
Anyway, a quick search of the list would have turned up something from me saying that you have cookie problems, and either need to fix the server_domain constant in conf.php, and/or follow the README about properly setting up apache so that server_domain can do its stuff and set the cookie information automatically.
