No, there is an easier solution. In the version of myth you are running, you do indeed have to kill the frontend, but not the backend. You can give the command to your tuner to change the channel -- ivtvctl for wintv, /dev/dtvsignal works do do this for the pchdtv. This will put it on a strong channel.
