I'm sure you all are aware of that only paying for cable modem service
and watching the basic channels that aren't filtered is illegal.
Comcast regularly audits their systems. In fact, they installed the
'audit device' and then quickly filtered my connection some years ago
when I lived in their territory. I even spoke to the appt. maintenance
guy who I had "fix" my cable, and he said they where all about
cracking down on it. I assume it's not worth their time to prosecute
people for it, but they do watch for it and stop it... at least
Comcast.

Who knows now, I live in an Adelphia area now. :)

Most cable companies charge more for cable modem only service, ie, no
TV. It would seam to me they charge the extra to cover the costs
involved in auditing and/or filtering devices, or, maybe just because
they assume you're going to steal the channels anyway.
