Actually, I never did! But you can compile Mplayer with DVB support, then from the command line you can launch it by passing it the channel name and stuff you want to watch. I was (and still am) a linux noob at the time so I gave up after trying to compile Mplayer several times.
I was lucky I guess, my cards just worked straight away when I started Myth.
