The paths in ld.so.conf are only search at run time, they do not
affect where the linker looks for things.
> ld -L /usr/X11R6/lib -lXext
> ld: warning: cannot find entry symbol _start; not setting start address
This is the correct way to do it. The error is just because you have
asked to link an executable but have not supplied any object file that
contains a main function.
