what's your environment? Fedora? knoppmyth? I had a similar problem and found it to be simply user stupidity (mine!) since my mixer had both line-in and speaker-out muted. also, if you are using KDE and ALSA, disable the KDE sound system, since it locks the sound card for itself. try using aplay to play a wav file try using mplayer to play a recored show
