[snip Cory's excellent in-depth explanation]

In case Cory's response left you scratching your head a little bit,
here's the bottom line:

- not all BT878 cards can capture audio over the PCI bus (btaudio); some
still require a pass-through to a sound card for recording audio.
Determining if a particular card supports capture via btaudio before
you buy it is somewhat of a black art, because manufacturers are
constantly revising their cards, changing chips/chipsets, etc, but not
changing model numbers.

- some BT878 cards do stereo; notably the WinTV-dbx models. I happen to
have one (WinTV-radio) that does both dbx stereo *and* btaudio, so I
can capture stereo audio right over the PCI bus. Again, there's no
guarantee that a *new* WinTV-radio card will support btaudio, because
of possible revisions to the card.
