I'm currently running two XBoxes as frontends and they do the job well. Here is a quick list of pros and cons based upon my experience:
Pros -) Cheap. Used or refurb Xboxes can be had on eBay for $125. Pick up a clone DVD remote kit while you're at it for $14 and that's all the hardware you'll need to build a frontend. You will also have to purchase a few odds & ends needed to mod the Xbox in order to install linux, but these can be re-used to mod additional XBoxes. -) Games. You can install MythTV and still be able play XBox games. -) Built-in CD/DVD drive from which to rip media, built in 10/100 NIC. Cons -) You'll have to devote some time to learning how to mod your XBox. You may alternatively send your XBox to be modded for free, but that's not as much fun as doing it yourself :-) -) Menu response is a little slow as compared to, say, an Athlon 2800 machine, but it's perfectly usable and easily passes the wife test. I've seen some references saying an old Tivo > or ReplayTV can't be used for this... but surely it's possible! :)
