It is a nice feature.  I find that if a person has a strong accent,
they are harder to understand at higher speeds than people with an
accent you're used to.  And of course some people naturally talk faster
than others.  One could imagine algorithms that look for gaps between
words and try to figure out if there is a fast talker or a slow talker,
or no talking at all, and adjust the speed of play (though not tremendously)
as things change. 

I have found that because of this you like to play with the playback
speed rather than leave it constant, which implies I might want to move
it to its own set of keys (at least when on a keyboard) rather than
having the adjustment be a "mode" you have to press A to get.
(Actually up arrow and down arrow probably don't need to be large jumps
when pgup/pgdn already do that) or one could use shift-arrows etc.
