I'd also backup the whole of /etc. I find a very easy way of backing up is to use System Rescue CD which backs up a partition to a network drive. If you've got a network drive somewhere this is a great solution as it's pretty easy to use and if anything goes wrong you just restore the partitions from backup. You download an ISO and burn that to CD to get a bootable CD which lets you run partimage etc for partition backups.
