I noticed this too but only when recording not during
LiveTV.  But the main culprit for me was mythcommflag.
 It was taking up to 40% CPU.  I'm going to turn off
commercial skipping to see if this helps.

During liveplayback it was 5% higher than before. 
Another difference though is that mythtvbackend uses
almost nothing when idle.
