I've only seen references to using irblaster for this model. If
possible, I'd like to avoid using the irblaster. I have noted that it
has a "2400 baud internal modem/phone jack" in the back. Well, this
page claims it's a modem jack:

I have a 302, not a 2700, but I'm pretty sure this just refers to the regular old connection you're supposed to hook up to your phone line so the box can phone home to tell Dish what pay-per-view movies you've watched. The box uses a modem to talk to Dish.

If the box did have some means of communicating with or being controlled by external devices, it wouldn't use a modem to do it. It would use a serial or parallel connection, so they wouldn't call it a modem in the docs.
