(should note that i'm not yet a mythtv user, and that I didn't see anything in
the documentation, but am asking because it influences planning an HTPC)

Just wondering whether Myth has any kind of dumb or intelligent support for
offline volumes. Volumes potentially being distant network storage which may
be down, detachable USB drives, and DVD burns. (of raw nuppel files, not
transcoded to dvdvideo). If not, wondering whether others think it would be a
good feature to have. Perhaps this would be a nice (and hopefully simple)
compromise between those wanting one-touch DVD export

I suppose i'd define dumb as either assuming all files are available at all
times and then asking for the right volume, and smart as stuff like:
    - having some kind of marking/sorting system in the frontend that for
instance I could ignore offline volumes (if i'm being lazy and just want to see
whats readily available :), or mark them in a special color (or different ones
based on source), or only use certain types or groups of offline volumes (a
group of DVDRW's labeled 'bedroom' for instance which are by that frontend, and
not the 'home theater' group of DVDRW's, and not any backends currently shut
off/needing booting)
    - exporting/importing extra information concerning the stream from the
volume (for instance commercial flagging done but not transcoded yet, database
entries, etc.) This would be great for bringing a USB drive with some shows to
a friends house if they also have myth, for instance. Or for simply postponing
jobs you dont have cpu time or HD space to finish right now (even dumping an
RTjpeg and commercial flag file offline til you record something more important
and export that for instance) You could have options to auto-import and keep
information from these volumes, to temporarily add it to the global database
(accessible to all head units) while the volume is available, or to only browse
it locally/directly. Though I dont think you'll want to stream 3 programs at
once from a single DVDRW. :P
    - optionally/eventually some semiintelligent sorting tools, for instance
marking shows for future collating. Moving certain types of shows to one
offline HD or a group of DVD's (still in nuppel format) or saying when 40gigs
is ready or whatever.

I'm sure others could think of cool options they might want to add, these are
just examples, not specific requests yet - i'd be happy with dumb support for
now or until I learn to code. (hopefully sometime late this year)
