Hello,
I got a surprise today because I hardly had any trouble finally getting ATI TV Out to work.
Hello,
An update and it is not as rosy as I thought after testing more stuff. I could not get the overlay i.e. video to display on the TV Out. I went through changing drivers, and modes. I was able to get into dual head mode but when I played video on the TV Out side it froze and locked up X. In clone mode I got the video on the computer monitor and a blue screen on the TV. I also did not like it when I changed modes like to dual head that xvideo goes away and I had to add the option to turn it on.
I had problems finding information and did see threads about the blue screen and lockups. I tried the suggestions and it did not work.
I even tried a Nvidia TNT2 Pro card I had because I read threads about how easy getting TV Out on the nvidia was. The nvidia driver locked X up at the start and did not work at all. Interestingly with the ATI card I got TV out when using the VESA framebuffer but no TV out at all for the nvidia. Maybe it is the card because it only has 16 Megs on it. On top of it I found out on the ATI site that the nvidia driver changes files around and I had to run the nvidia install script with a --uninstall option.
There is a mtrr overlap problem that I fixed but it did not make a difference. I added the option "video=vesafb:mtrr,vga=0x315,vram:128" to the kernel parameters (only include the characters inside the quotes). The vram:128 indicates I have 128 MB of video ram on the card and I also added the vga=0x315 to come up in 800x600x24 video mode. This got rid of the mtrr overlap error message.
I installed Xorg 6.8.2 from the SuSE ftp site but the radeon driver updates do not include TV Out. SuSE also has the ATI driver and installation instructions on their ftp site and mirrors. I found the latest version of SaX2 also on the ftp site handles the installation of the driver better than the stock SaX2 from SuSE 9.2.
The directories are off of ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/
I found out via the ATI control panel that the card is a 9200LE and the driver detects it as a 9200. I do not know if this is a problem or not.
So the current result after reassembling and reinstalling parts of my system is the preview screen in MythTV works on both monitors but the MythTV full screen only works on the computer monitor. MPlayer only works on the computer monitor. I have to unplug the computer monitor and restart X to get MythTV full screen and MPlayer to work on TV out. I guess this will be okay when I go to a TV only display.
