Or you could have changed the mixer from '/dev/mixer' to 'default' as has been discussed on this list a few times ;-)

OSS=/dev/mixer, ALSA=default

Even with the ALSA mixer set to default you may or may not be able to control the volume using spdif. It depends on your sound card and the version of ALSA.
