The answer is yes and no.

    Yes: With the right video card you can display it on your old TV
        using an svideo or composite cable.

    No:  It will not be HDTV, it will be regular TV.  It will be
        letterboxed.   It will look a fair bit better than the regular
        TV for a variety of reasons (you're downsizing a much higher
        quality signal) but it will still be the best that SDTV can
        do, it won't be HDTV.


    Yes:  You can watch it on your computer monitor, in fact probably
        in higher def than the big screen display you plan to buy.
        Just smaller.
