I recently bought a Turtle Beach Riviera sound card with the optical output. Following Jarod's guide I managed to get the optical output working using ALSA. The optical cable is the only audio connection between my mythtv box and my receiver. My movies get played in Dolby Digital 5.1 (or DTS), and sound from recorded TV (from my pvr250/350) gets converted to PCM audio and is still transmitted via the optical cable...
