Some more data:

It happens with no sound. (I shut down alsa and ran mythfrontend
without sound)

It happens with xvmc. (I got drm/unichrome/libgl installed and xvmc
running). Only difference was b&w OSD and lockups.

Thursday I have an 8 port switch arriving so I can eliminate a hub
that's on my network. I'll also try minimizing the network then --
removing the router to the internet and removing a wireless hub.

I'm not sure if the problem is mythfrontend getting data off the backend
via ethernet or getting the video to the display.
