the extremely high level of interest in the community for a MacMini PVR
solution it seems to make a lot of sense.
If it's just the hardware that interests you, there's no reason you
wouldn't be able to run Linux on a Mac Mini with MythTV and a TV402U. If
you prefer OS X, Plextor sells a TV402U bundle for the Mac that comes with
Elgato EyeTV PVR software which should run on the Mac Mini, although I
haven't used it myself so I can't say much about it. Obviously EyeTV
wouldn't work with MythTV frontends over the network. -Nathan
Yes, I'm aware of the bundle with EyeTV, but I infinitely prefer MythTV over EyeTV - zero question about it! I also see a much brighter future for MythTV vs. non-open source products as the nightmare of our fair-use rights being stripped away continues to get worse.
As for just running the hardware with Linux, I was under the impression that there is an issue with big-endian/little-endian - namely, PPC/MacMini is big-endian and in MythTV there are some little-endian fields in some of the headers. These fields need to be byte-swapped so that they're interpreted correctly on PPC. As for how much work this is, I don't know - but taken in combination with Isaac's comments of "no mac port anytime soon" I'm assuming it's a more difficult process.
In any case, it lead me to believe that even running Linux on PPC would still not be a workable solution for MythTV. If that assumption was wrong, by all means correct me and I'll wipe and rebuild my mini in Linux tonight and see how far I can get with MythTV. :-)
Certainly, the current holy grail would be to have the whole system run under MacOSX on a MacMini with the TV402U in MPEG4. I'm not holding my breath for that, but the hope alone would be enough to get me to purchase a TV402U to run my ShuttleXPC-based mythtv backend with in the hopes that I could move it over to the MacMini at a future date without needing to purchase additional hardware.
In the meantime, I have justified the XPC-based backend with the PVR-500MCE dual tuner card I currently have installed. Two tuners is better than one, right? :-) Now if only I could, uh, get that tuner working.... :-)
