Sorry for the stupid question, but I haven't found any references to this yet. I want to build a myth box to replace/complement my DirecTV box (TivoToGo is not an option on this box). What gets plugged into what?

You will need to use audio/video cables from the Directv receiver into a capture card in the MythTV computer.

Can the Myth box completely replace the DirecTV box (preferred, in my opinion), or does it go inline to either side of it?

You will still need the Directv receiver because the Directv (and Dish for that matter) satellite signals are encrypted. If you have a choice you should use the S-Video connection and not the composite video connection.

Which system controls scheduling of programs, and how does a remote control fit into this picture?

Myth will control your satellite receiver. Contrary to what most people say, *a lot* of the Directv receivers have serial ports for channel changing (it is most (all?) of the Dish receivers that don't). Which Directv receiver do you have? On RCA's it is usually labeled "Low speed data" and looks like a telephone handset plug (not to be confused with the Phone jack). See http://dtvcontrol.com for more info.

Also, search the archives. This has been asked and answered many times. http://gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/
