If you have a choice you should use the S-Video connection and not the composite video connection.

Contrary to what most people say, *a lot* of the Directv receivers have serial ports for channel changing (it is most (all?) of the Dish receivers that don't). Which Directv receiver do you have? On RCA's it is usually labeled "Low speed data" and looks like a telephone handset plug (not to be confused with the Phone jack). See http://dtvcontrol.com for more info.
