It would receive the ir pulses from the remote control and pass them on to the MythTV software on the FRONT END. The back end ir receiver would become irrelevant - you won't use it.
You would set up lirc to use the module appropriate to your ir receiver, instead of the lirc_i2c module used for the PVR-250's receiver. Your modprobe.conf file would contain lines appropriate to this module. There are a number of serial ir receivers in use. I use an IRMAN, but that might not be the cheapest or easiest.
