It appears that you've only considered internal sound cards. External sound cards have several advantages over internal. First of all, noise. If you're using analog i/o, it's better to keep the analog signals outside of the computer case since EMF is strong inside the case. External sound devices also tend to have a better selection of i/o ports. They can also easily be shared between multiple machines.
