I get "Unexpected response to MYTH_PROTO_VERSION". ... Any hints before I go code trolling ?

Sure - this msg comes from MythContext::CheckProtoVersion
(libs/libmyth/mythcontext.cpp).
It occurs when the response isn't either 'REJECT' or 'ACCEPT'. Check
the log on your
backend for "Bad MYTH_PROTO_VERSION". Another thing to do is fire up
ethereal and
take a peek at the protocol exchange (filter on: tcp.dstport == 6543 or
tcp.srcport == 6543).
