I had the exact same problem with the joystick, they seem to be made rather shoddily. I briefly experimented with the receiver with a few other remotes and never did get it to receive IR signals. I think the IR only refers to the IR transmitter on the remote for use with other IR devices and the LED is purely that. I'm unsure about any of the other questions. HTH.
