Hi, I am new on this list and I hope I am not breaking any netiquite here... but ...

That sounds like mythbackend is not running, not the mySQL server. The "Master Backend Server" is mythbackend

Try opening a console and typing
mythbackend

then retry running mythfrontend

(I am assuming that you are running everything on one box here)

Try running mythtv-setup and check the settings in there.

<snip> Now when I try to go into any menu, I get this error:

Could not connect to the master backend server -- is it running? Is
the IP address set for it in the setup program correct?

If I exit and run "/etc/init.d/mysql start" it reports that mysql is
already running. I also verified that the IP address is correct.
