Have you tried to copy any macrovision-protected VHS tapes? If so, does your
capture card generate all these jacked up video files as if you were doing a
VHS->VHS copy?
I don't know for sure, but IIRC some of the video capture chips
(Like the philips one used in the PVR-250) can support macrovision
detection. I'm pretty sure it can be ignored by the chip, so most likely
the driver does that.
