This comment was much more polite however.

I don't have a lot of room in my case, and I also don't want to increase the temperature in there very much, if possible. In fact, the only other HD brackets I have are for 2.5" drives. If I want to add another drive, it goes in to the floppy slot, and won't be fastened down. It's a very nice case, but it's a smaller form factor though.

It's not that hard just to prevent yourself from pulling out the cable while the machine is running, ya know, much like you wouldn't do that for the power cord...

My comment was in response to LVM over external USB devices, just to clarify.

I don't mean in terms of performance, more in terms of just the fact
that it's an external drive. It seems like a bad idea to base a system
around a removable drive that you can't remove without ruining the
rest of the filesystem. It would be kind of like taking a floppy drive
and gluing the disk into the drive and using it as permenant instead
of removable storage.

If there's no other way to add a device, I guess it's possible, but I
would think it would make more sense financially to add a $20 raid
card or similar and add a few more internal devices. The cost of an
external drive over the cost of an internal drive is really just the
USB/firewire interface, case, and power supply, so it seems like a
waste to me...

no, but I was thinking about trying it with 4 drives
I did try using two WD 120 gig drives (8 MB buffer, connected via IDE) buffers
in a stripe set.
It actually did worse performance wise than a single WD 160 gig (also 8 MB
buffer).

that sounds like a famously bad idea to me...

LVM is beautiful thing as well ;)

Which reminds me, has anyone tried to span a LVM volume to

include an

external USB 2.0 drive?
