Replying to myself, maybe it is of use for others.
I'm seeing similar problems on my EPIA-M10K - when commercial skipping, or ff'ing, I see the recording length skipping backwatds/forwards around the correct recording length, and after a while it stops, and not much has happened.
More digging around in the archives I think I found my problem: my frontend was not running the same timezone as the server. Putting the same /etc/localtime file on both front and backend seemed to have solved my problems - an initial 'i' gives me the correct show length.
