Just use pidof.
A handy trick thats useful for scripts and the like (instead of having
to do all the ps -A | grep | grep -v ps mumbo-jumbo):
if [ $(pidof mtd) ]; then
kill $(pidof mtd)
fi
or even
for i in $(pidof mythfrontend) ]; do
kill $(i)
done
