I have watched stuff for a couple of days and although I get the occasional infrequent hiccup (guess everyone does) I do not get the prebuffering pause messages like I used to and playback is smooth!!
I can go on to fix the sometimes distorted sound and RW/FF issues now!
Thanks and regards, Graham

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't believe I am using XvMC - I don't think ATI currently support it (can't see a mention on the Rage3D forums).
Ah, I must have missed that point... :)
I looked through the 'extremely choppy video' thread again, as I did a few days back, but could not really see anything of use. Except perhaps the post:I believe so, although mine is set to /dev/dsp, but I should probably change that...
"I had this exact problem when playing the sound through ALSA dmix.
I workarounded it by using the actual ALSA hardware device instead. "
Any idea how I can check this? My output is set to ALSA:default and mixer=default is this correct?
I will try the video as timeline option tonight. I have already tried turning off priority threads and the chmod a+s.
I recall someone also mentioned something about libmpeg2 causing a problem for him, might try that as well. The video as timeline option made it worse for me, I believe, but that could have been something else.
