how you intend to use your system. Performance may not be an issue
but data reliability could be.
I meant _hardware_ raid (and I really meant, cheap, on-the-motherboard RAID) is a waste of time :)
Proper hardware raid is probably overkill but hey, let he who is without sin...
BTW that ref is : http://linux.yyz.us/sata/faq-sata-raid.html
Instead you should use the linux raid subsystem (md devices) see: http://www.mythtv.info/moin.cgi/AdministrationSoftware_2fLvmRaid
I actually run a 1.2 TB raid 5 system with 6x250GB sata disks (and a 250Gb spare too!)
*when* (not if) one of them fails (again) the hot spare kicks in and I end up not losing a single show.
Not only that, I'm covered in case another one fails whilst I'm waiting for the RMA process (as happened once!)
For example if you're using your systems as a video or music library. Maybe you've ripped and transcoded hundreds of dvd's or thousands of
cd's and don't want to lose the data because of the time invested. Or
maybe you have all the shows of a TV series recorded (e.g. the old
Outer Limits shows) and it may be very difficult to reproduce.
totally agree :)
Once we get into the realm of huge storage, the things we can do with
our systems greatly expands. But the likelihood that we can backup
the data diminishes.
Which is why I run what I do...
