I'm *far* from an expert on this sort of thing, but all I was thinking of was using the average of each 3x3 (or larger?) block of pixels when computing the max and min brightness for the frame. This is crude, but I think just about any non-blank frame should have brightness variations on a length scale longer than this. Dan
