I think I have it fixed! 

I switched to the 7167 driver, and the problem went away (at least for now). 

Any idea why the 6629 failed and the 7167 worked?  I have the geforce4 MX 440 card on the biostar M7NCG 400 microAtx board.

After an hour of messing around, I deleted the .kde directory in the home folder (ie rm -rf /root/.kde) and it started up fine.
