reading messages group by conversation most of the time so you don't
want to scroll all the way to the bottom each time you read the next
message.
Scrolling down is only a problem because a lot of the bottom posters don't properly trim their quotes to the relevant portion they are replying to. You just have to laugh when someone replies after the quote and leaves 5 copies of the mailing list signatures. :-)
