I believe this is something that is overcome by a properly tweaked out .asoundrc. I never have to flip any switches, and everything under the sun plays perfectly out the coax digital output on my Audigy to a Yamaha amp, using the .asoundrc on my page.
*typically* i don't have to do this ... i only have to do this after xine leaves the system in "ac3 mode" and until my next reboot (which is rare, i mean .. it's linux, why reboot? :P)
how different are asoundrc files for the Audigy and SBLive! Value 1024?
