xbmc-mythtv just uses the version of mplayer residing in xbmc...to my knowledge it is possible to play mpeg4 using xbmc's mplayer, i think wherever you heard that xbmc-mythtv can only play mpeg2 was misworded, what they wanted to say was that it can't play the rtjpeg or nuv files created by non-hardware encoder tuner cards. My guess is that your problem resides elsewhere, try double checking your settings. The problem i ran into that was stopping me from playing recordings was that the path to my recordings share was wrong, because the %h hostname variable in the path was not resolving to the correct ip address, the solution was just to put the ip address in the spot where %h was. But then again you might have another problem
