Thanks for the quick response.

I forgot to mention that this is a frontend-only system, with no capture 
cards. It's connected to a backend that serves other frontends successfully. 
Also, this frontend has no trouble seeing content other than video on the 
backend -- that is, it sees the list of recordings, system status 
information, can schedule items for recording on the backend, etc.
