I've been contemplating desiging an uirt2-controlled monitor on/off switch. The switching would be done using a Maxim switch chip through which the monitor clocking signals pass. If you're clever and more ambitious than I, you could do the same thing.
Or you could get one of those IOGear KVM thingies for $30. But, I bet the DPMS settings will work.
