I would also verify that the tuner type is set correctly. I had a similar problem where if I manually set the tuner type, I could see one channel, but that was it. If I let it auto-detect and set the tuner, it works flawlessly.

In my modules config I have:

options ivtv tuner=-1,-1 debug=1

I can probably remove the debug, since everything works.

As a matter of fact, you can (should) remove the tuner options since the default is to autodetect the tuner (and, since -1 is not a valid tuner type, -1 tells it to autodetect). If you also remove the debug, you should just remove the options line.

Ah, that makes sense. I'll have to try that. Why is it that every guide/how-to says to force it to type 2? Is the auto-detect stuff fairly recent?

Yeah. Autodetection was added around 0.1.10-pre2-ck85 (or so). Since there hasn't been a "stable" release since then, all the documentation that exists is currently written for 0.1.9 (and, in most cases not well written since there are over 50 tuners usable through the Linux tuner driver and Hauppauge uses a great number of them in their cards--meaning 2 is very seldom correct).

However, since the pre-release 0.2 versions are actually more stable (and far more feature-filled) than the "stable" 0.1.9, it doesn't really make sense to use the "stable" version anymore. Eventually, the quantity of documentation that was written for the 0.2+ versions will exceed that of the 0.1.9 versions, so people will be more likely to find the new info.
