I have an old 1.0 or 1.1 vsn Xbox and have soft-modded it. I instaled Xbox Media Centre (XBMC) and the mythtv python scripts. Sadly this doesn't work because the mplayer that comes with XBMC doesn't support MPEG4 which is the format of my recordings. However, I'm soon to start using MPEG2 from a new digital TV card on my backend so this should solve that. The python scripts are good because you don't have to wait for linux to boot - you get the immediate boot ups of a normal Xbox. They're limited in functionality, however. To investigate further search for xbmcmythtv on Google.
