May I ask what your xorg.conf (or XF86Config) looks like to get HDTV resolutions? I have seen the "TVStandard" "HD1080i" mentioned in the nvidia readme, but it seems to relate to TVout encoder, not VGA/DVI output. Do you just generate modelines using "videogen" or something, or are there named builtins in the nvidia driver?
