I guess it's because the frontend can't tell whether the backend is busy (transcoding or whatnot). Also I'm not sure that shutting down the backend lets it set up the 'wake up' function cleanly. It's not a problem though. Just set the backend to issue a shutdown request on idle (in mythtvsetup).
