I find the windows platform far better suited to ripping and transcoding DVD's for the household library.
DVD decrypter rips the DVD in IFO mode - takes around 7-12 minutes AutoGK transcodes the DVD using two pass xvid encoding at around 40-55 fps. In total, it takes me about 1.5x the length of the movie to put it on my file server. One of the nice things is that you can do them in batches.
