No, after pasting the mythtranscode command it executes and drops right
back to the CLI immeditaly with no message.

The only time I've seen this happen is on a bad encode from my pvr-150. Dunno what to say other than that. Have you tried on any other recordings? Have you tried an strace on mythtranscode to see why it's dying?

The ffmpeg command line is below about the fifo error.

well, if mythtranscode quits, there will be no fifo, so that's understandable.
